Project Details

The Withington Public Realm project set out to revitalise the local community and create a more welcoming, inclusive environment. As the first public realm improvement undertaken by Manchester City Council (MCC) outside the city centre, the scheme aimed to reimagine Withington’s core spaces as vibrant destinations that encourage social interaction, support local businesses and reflect the area’s unique character.

Located between Copson Street and Rutherford Place, the project was designed to establish a central communal hub through the creation of a new public square and a pedestrian-focused high street, with improved spaces for retail, hospitality and events. Reducing traffic dominance, simplifying access routes, and removing unnecessary street clutter were key objectives, alongside integrating rain gardens, tree pits and colourful seating to enhance biodiversity, sustainability and community use.

Our Solution

BSFG supplied a bespoke range of seating and cycle racks to support the project’s goals of accessibility, inclusivity, and aesthetic impact.

The Atollo Bench made its UK debut in this project, creating a striking focal point outside the Withington Library. Its tiered, timber-clad design resembles giant lily pads, offering both visual impact and functional seating that encourages people to stop and take in their surroundings.

Lifford Concrete Bollard Stools serve a dual purpose, acting as both informal seating and protective bollards to deter curb mounting. Arranged in rows, they clearly define pedestrian zones while providing practical resting points.

Deacon Cubes, with their timber cladding and bold powder-coated finishes, add vibrant pops of colour to the newly pedestrianised streets. Their scattered layout allows smooth passage for pedestrians, mobility scooters, prams and cyclists, while creating flexible, engaging spaces for the community to enjoy.

Outcome

The transformation of Withington’s public realm has created an accessible, sustainable, and engaging community space that celebrates local character. BSFG’s seating solutions have helped shape a welcoming environment where people naturally gather, rest, and connect—contributing to a lasting legacy of urban renewal.
