Project Details

Deyes High School in Maghull has recently moved into a new purpose-built school campus, creating a modern and sustainable learning environment for around 1,400 students.

The £40 million redevelopment has transformed the school campus, creating a 10,000m² facility with specialist teaching spaces, sports facilities, landscaped external areas and a range of sustainable design features.

As part of Phase 2 of the project, BSFG helped to optimise the school's external spaces, providing dedicated cycle parking, covered outdoor areas and a range of external furniture for students to use throughout the school day.

The project was delivered by D Morgan Plc, with DEP Landscape appointed as the landscape architect.

The works were designed to support the school's focus on active travel, sustainability and student wellbeing, while making the most of the outdoor spaces across the campus.

Our Solution

BSFG supplied a range of cycle parking, shelter and external furniture solutions to support the school's requirements.

Over 30 metres of Heron Canopies were supplied to create extensive covered cycle parking for students. The modular nature of the Heron system lent itself particularly well to the project, allowing the cycle parking provision to be configured around the available space while providing the capacity required by the school. The canopies provide valuable protection for students and bikes from the elements.

BSFG also supplied two 16m x 4m Bexley Canopies, creating generous covered outdoor spaces where students can gather, relax and socialise during break times. The canopies incorporate photovoltaic panels, helping to generate renewable energy and contribute towards the school's wider sustainability targets.

The external spaces were further enhanced with Greengate seats and benches, providing additional places for students to sit and interact, alongside Buffalo litter bins to support clean and well-maintained outdoor areas.

Together, the products provide a coordinated approach to cycle parking, shelter, seating and waste management, helping to create functional and welcoming external spaces for students.

Outcome

The Phase 2 works have helped Deyes High School make better use of its external spaces, providing dedicated facilities for active travel alongside comfortable and sheltered areas for students to use during break times.

The new cycle parking infrastructure provides substantial, weather-protected capacity for students, while the modular approach to the Heron Canopies allowed the provision to be tailored to the school's requirements and the available space on site.

The Bexley Canopies create valuable outdoor spaces that can be used throughout the school day and in varying weather conditions, while the integrated photovoltaic panels support the school's wider commitment to sustainable design.

These features complement the extensive sustainability measures incorporated throughout the wider development, including more than 3,000m² of solar panels, natural ventilation, air source heat pumps, enhanced insulation and a BioSolar roof. The school's sustainable approach has already delivered measurable results, with energy use reported at just 67% of the Department for Education's energy target and solar panels generating more than 478,000kWh of electricity.

By combining practical cycle parking, flexible shelter solutions and complementary street furniture, BSFG has helped create an external environment that supports active travel, student wellbeing and the school's long-term sustainability ambitions.
