Frederick House, York
Project Details
Frederick House sits within the grounds of the former head office of the building company Shepherd Group, which was founded in York in 1890 by Frederick Shepherd.
The regeneration of the two-acre site sees the former Frederick House building being replaced with new buildings to provide a modern and sustainable student living development. The existing Guard House at the front of the site has been retained and used as a communal learning and well-being resource for residents. The building also features a hosting kitchen which students can book out for events and parties.
The grounds also feature significant landscaping and external amenities for the residents including seating areas, litter bins, picnic tables and sheltered cycle parking. BSFG worked with the client to meet a tight deadline and provide a cohesive and unified suite of products that create an attractive environment for the students.
In order to achieve a consistent aesthetic across the external grounds, our team put forward a collection of elements from our Deacon Range of street furniture. This range features simple, largely timber products with a focus on superior-quality materials. The result is a coordinated package of durable hardwood products that create a natural and inviting environment.
A key objective of the project was to deliver sustainable development and the client was committed to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, which will establish the scheme in the top 10 percent of sustainable buildings in the UK.
BSFG’s reliable stainless steel cycle stands and Eastbrook cycle shelters have been provided to aid this objective and encourage the residents to cycle with safe storage for their bikes.
The historic York site now provides rooms for 368 students with a host of amenities including a fitness suite, lounge, games room, cinema, study spaces, and attractive outdoor areas.
