Peine Square
BSFG delivered bespoke seating, cycle parking and street furniture to help transform Heywood’s Peine Square into a vibrant community hub.
Project Details
BSFG partnered with Conlon Construction and Rochdale Development Agency to help deliver the transformation of Peine Square, a key public square in the heart of Heywood town centre. Working alongside landscape architects Planit-ie, BSFG designed and manufactured a large, double-tiered podium seating structure and supplied a range of coordinated public realm furniture including cycle parking, picnic sets, seating and litter bins.
The furniture was installed as part of a wider redevelopment that introduced new paving, lighting, performance spaces and planting to create a vibrant, flexible public space outside the Heywood Civic Centre.
Project Background
Peine Square occupies a highly prominent position directly in front of the Heywood Civic Centre and is one of the most important public spaces in the town centre. As part of the government-funded Pride in Place programme, almost £1 million was invested in the square to help transform it from a space people passed through into a destination where people could meet, relax and enjoy events.
The redevelopment introduced new paving, feature lighting, informal play areas and extensive greenery, as well as a dedicated power supply to support performances, markets and community events. This project marks the first phase of a wider £20 million investment programme into Heywood over the next decade.
Designed by Planit and delivered by Conlon Construction, with Rochdale Development Agency, Hive Projects and Identity Consult, the scheme forms part of a broader regeneration of Heywood town centre, alongside the refurbishment of the Civic Centre and major improvements to surrounding roads and transport links.
Our Solution
BSFG provided a bespoke suite of furniture to complement the architectural and landscape design and to support the square’s role as a flexible community and events space.
At the centre of the scheme is a large, double-tiered podium seating structure, designed and manufactured by BSFG. The feature seating overlooks the public performance area outside the Heywood Civic Centre and incorporates integrated lighting and laser-cut lettering, creating a striking focal point both day and night.
To encourage everyday use of the square, BSFG supplied Greengate seating and picnic sets, finished in a vibrant yellow powder coating to bring energy and warmth into the space. Wheelchair-accessible picnic tables were also included, ensuring the square is welcoming and usable for everyone.
Waste and recycling provision was delivered using our Box Solid litter bins in a corten-style powder-coated finish, complete with yellow vinyl signage and discreet corner ashtrays to keep the space clean and well-maintained.
For active travel users, Inside Cycle Stands were installed throughout the square. Powder-coated in matching yellow, these provide secure cycle parking while contributing to a cohesive and contemporary visual identity across the site.
Outcome
The completed Peine Square has been transformed into a lively, attractive and highly functional public space that supports both everyday use and large-scale community events. BSFG’s bespoke podium seating and coordinated street furniture play a key role in defining the character of the square, providing places to sit, meet, watch performances and enjoy the revitalised town centre.
By combining bold colour, durable materials and inclusive design, the scheme encourages people to stay longer, interact with the space and return regularly. The project has helped create a new civic heart for Heywood, supporting the wider regeneration of the town centre and delivering a lasting legacy for local residents, businesses and visitors alike.
