Functional spaces that make us stop

“Streets need to be adapted to play a broader role in people’s general wellbeing, by offering a social, cultural and community experience” - Dan Jeffs, Infrastructure Officer, Sustrans

The benefits of having a green street is now well documented, how we function and move around our immediate area has a huge impact on our well being. Walking and cycling as opposed to cars and busses has a positive effect on our mental health but is also much less isolating. We are able to connect with the passerby, stop and look around us and most importantly connect.

By making our spaces function better post covid we will be enabling social distancing. Our environments need to develop into multi-sensory areas, we need to create attractive spaces to entice social connection. By planting trees and adding furniture, benches, work stations in conjunction with restricting car parking and traffic we can give people places to gather, play and communicate. To stop instead of pass.

Traffic lanes can be reallocated to house planters and seating. Our green space can be redistributed. Covid has made it much more difficult for communities to interact but outside and in the future there will be a way.
