Dalton Park Cycle Hub
BSFG partnered with Durham County Council to deliver a new cycle parking hub at Dalton Park Outlet & Outdoors.
Project Details
BSFG was appointed by Durham County Council to deliver new cycle parking infrastructure at Dalton Park Outlet & Outdoors in North East England. The project supports the centre’s commitment to greener travel, enhanced visitor convenience, and long-term sustainability. It also complements earlier BSFG installations across the site, including concrete furniture, seating and planters.
Project Background
Dalton Park has served as a major retail hub since opening in 2003, with regular investment into public realm improvements and environmental initiatives. In 2025, the centre introduced new sustainability measures aimed at encouraging low-carbon travel and reducing single-use plastics. These included covered cycle storage, solar-powered e-bike charging, hydration stations, and expanded biodiversity programmes.
To support these initiatives, BSFG was asked to provide a secure, durable and user-friendly cycle parking solution suitable for both everyday commuters and visitors arriving by bike.
Our Solution
Working in partnership with Durham County Council, BSFG delivered a comprehensive cycle parking hub within Dalton Park’s central piazza, designed to maximise capacity, support both standard and cargo bikes, and provide on-site maintenance. The solution builds on our long-standing relationship with Dalton Park and aligns fully with the centre’s sustainability goals, offering clear visibility, strong security and reliable weather protection.
The installation centres on an Open-Fronted Deacon Shelter, constructed with a robust steel frame and timber cladding, topped with a corrugated steel roof for durable weather resistance. Its open design ensures easy access and good sightlines while contributing a contemporary aesthetic to the public realm.
To provide secure bike storage, Streetpods were installed, offering a highly robust locking system and a compact footprint suited to busy retail environments. A Pump & Repair Stand gives cyclists the tools for quick adjustments, while dedicated Cargo Bike Stands accommodate larger bicycles with added stability. The hub is illuminated by solar-powered LED lighting, improving safety and visibility while maintaining a low-energy, sustainability-led approach.
Outcome
The new cycle hub has significantly enhanced Dalton Park’s sustainable travel offering, creating a more convenient and environmentally responsible experience for visitors. It provides secure, easy-to-use parking for both standard and cargo bikes, incorporates lighting for improved safety, and supports active travel through repair and charging facilities.
The installation also ties neatly into earlier BSFG contributions to the site’s public realm, helping create a cohesive and modern environment. Dalton Park now offers a cycling experience that aligns with contemporary expectations—safe, accessible and sustainability-focused—reinforcing its position as a forward-thinking retail destination.
