Project Details

BSFG was commissioned to provide an extensive planting bed system for the newly refurbished University Station in Birmingham. The project aimed to enhance the public realm surrounding the station, creating an inviting and historically sensitive landscape that integrates seamlessly with the site's rich heritage.

Historical Significance

The University Station site holds considerable historical interest, dating back to AD 50 with the Metchley Roman Fort settlement. Over the centuries, it has evolved from an industrial transport hub featuring canals and railways into a modern university transit point. The landscape architects collaborated closely with Historic England, Birmingham City Council, and project archaeologist Alex Jones to ensure the design remained sympathetic to the site’s history.

By carefully analysing the archaeological records, the team developed a framework that respected the existing terrain, incorporating elements such as earth banks and double ditches into the design. The final plan features wide, paved pedestrian routes arranged in a triangular formation, seamlessly guiding visitors towards the station entrance while reflecting the fort’s historical layout.

BSFG’s Inspira Form Planting System

To accommodate the site’s unique contours and historical features, BSFG supplied and installed its Inspira Form planting system. This adaptable system covers large spans of raised bedding that house grass mounds planted with native wildflowers and bulbs, marking the original locations of the Roman fort.

Key features of the planter design include:

• Retaining Wall System: Designed to accommodate the site's existing elevations, preserving the integrity of the fort’s terrain.
• Integrated Drainage: Incorporation of weep holes to ensure effective water management.
• Bespoke Powder Coating: The planter walls have been finished in Mars Sable 2525, aligning with the station’s site-wide colour scheme and paying tribute to Birmingham’s industrial past.

Enhancing the Public Realm

This project not only respects the heritage of the site but also significantly improves its accessibility and usability. The central plaza serves as a flexible space for formal events, informal gatherings, and general public recreation. Prioritising pedestrian connectivity and legibility, the landscape provides a seamless interface between University Station, the University of Birmingham, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Outcome

The University Station redevelopment demonstrates how modern infrastructure projects can successfully integrate historical preservation with contemporary design. BSFG’s contribution, through its Inspira Form planting system, ensures that the landscape remains both functional and historically resonant, offering a vibrant and engaging space for commuters, students, and the local community.
