Locomotion Museum, Shildon
Project Details
Bailey Street Furniture Group (BSFG) worked with Durham County Council and the Science Museum Group to enhance accessibility and sustainability at the Locomotion Museum, located along a popular cycle path.
The project aimed to deliver secure, accessible cycle parking and a minor repair facility, all while prioritising environmental sustainability and user convenience.
Our Solution
BSFG proposed the Deacon Shelter design, featuring Thermopine cladding. This heat-treated pine wood is sourced sustainably, requires no annual preservatives, and reduces long-term maintenance costs.
For cycle storage, BSFG provided:
- Streetpods: Police-approved, made from 100% recycled materials, and designed to secure both standard and quick-release bikes with ease.
- Cargo Bike Stands: Specially designed to accommodate non-standard cycles such as tandems, tricycles, and cargo bikes.
To enhance the user experience and sustainability, BSFG included:
- Solar-powered LED lighting on the shelter roof.
- A pump and repair stand for minor repairs and tyre inflation.
- A leaflet dispenser for maps and visitor information.
Outcome
This bespoke solution supports the Locomotion Museum’s commitment to sustainability while providing an inclusive and accessible facility for cyclists. Made with durable, recycled, and recyclable materials, the project exemplifies eco-conscious design within the rail and transport sector.
