Project Details

The Beaufort Road Boulevard project is a significant component of the Wirral Waters Masterplan, a visionary development aimed at revitalising Birkenhead’s waterfront. Wirral Waters is a long-term, large-scale regeneration project developed by Peel L&P and supported by the UK Government. It is focused on creating a vibrant mixed-use community that integrates residential, commercial, and industrial spaces.

As part of this transformational initiative, the Beaufort Road Boulevard area serves as a key thoroughfare connecting various zones within the development, including the Marine, Energy, and Automotive Park (MEA Park). MEA Park is set to become the industrial core of Wirral Waters, providing state-of-the-art facilities for manufacturing, logistics, research, and development. With its proximity to motorway access, rail links, and quayside wharfage, MEA Park will attract a range of industries, fostering economic growth and job creation in the region.

The Solution

To align with the forward-thinking and sustainable nature of the Wirral Waters Masterplan, the urban landscape needed elements that were not only functional but reflective of the area's rich maritime heritage. This led to the collaboration between BSFG and Cambrianway Ltd, resulting in the installation of bespoke Word Bollards along Beaufort Road Boulevard.

The design of these bollards is unique, utilising custom screen printing to incorporate International maritime signal flags. These flags, historically used for communication between ships, are repurposed in this project to identify the various entrance gates to the site. This creative nod to Birkenhead’s maritime past enhances the cultural significance of the area while providing a distinctive visual identity.

Outcome

The integration of BSFG’s bespoke Word Bollards have received positive feedback for their innovative approach to blending functionality with heritage.

Local stakeholders have praised the design for its ability to honour the maritime history of Birkenhead while providing a contemporary, practical solution for the urban landscape. The distinctive look of the bollards also adds to the visual cohesion of the development, ensuring that it stands out as a landmark in the area.
